Club News
The Sprint Gala was a
great success. Many thanks to all parents who helped as these events take a
lot of work to make them run smoothly. The event is all about encouraging
swimmers to set Personal Bests by giving them a competitive environment. It
certainly seems to have worked as we had 245 Personal Bests set across the
two evenings, including four new club records. The results processing is
quite hectic on the night. After the event we check every individual time so
that the final entries to onto the database are correct. The results were
available as a handout at the Desk and are also on the Noticeboard at the
shallow end. The new top rankings of Personal Bests for each age group for
team selection are also on the board.
The team is currently
having a fantastic season in the Cotswold League. After two victories and a
second place, we are currently top of the League! Congratulations to the
whole squad!
Swimwear
Details of the FINA
swimwear rule changes were in the previous newsletter but parents may have
thought they just referred to the banning of bodysuits. This is not the case
and the rules do apply at all levels of swimming where we operate under ASA
conditions. There are two issues that affect our swimmers: Jammers must not
extend below the knee. Swimmer may only wear ONE costume, or ONE pair of
trunks or jammers and may not wear anything at all underneath. Please
ensure that your children are wearing appropriate swimwear. It helps if you
select the correct size as all swimwear stretches when wet and gets baggier
when it gets older. Tight swimwear creates less drag and makes it easier to
swim faster.
The rules apply at all levels of swimming. This means boys can ONLY wear
Jammers or trunks, girls can wear one costume and swimmers may not wear
anything underneath. Boys’ Jammers cannot be below the knee. We are obliged
to conform to all rules laid down by our Governing Body and so will be
required to enforce this.
Times Evenings
This term’s Times Evenings
will be held in May and swimmers should attend at their normal session time.
Any PBs set at Times Evenings count towards awards at the annual
presentation evening where trophies go to those who’ve made the most
consistent improvements in their 50m times. Times Evenings are not only an
opportunity to set new PBs but teachers also observe the swimmers and
provide suitable feedback and coaching in the subsequent weeks.
It also enables
swimmers to check on how they are improving by noting their times in their
Log Books and comparing with their previous times. Spare Log Books are
always available at the club desk. It is important that swimmers who train
on two nights should attend both evenings as they would any other week, as
different distances may be covered. This is also excellent practise for
racing and provides ranking information for selecting the team.
Sponsored Swim
In order to raise funds for Club, the Committee has
decided to hold a sponsored swim on the training nights of 29th/30th
June. More details to follow.
AGM This year’s AGM is on Monday 10th May, starting at 7.30pm, at Chilcompton Village Hall, and is open to all parents. If you wish to stand for a committee position or propose anything, please pick up a nomination form from the Desk or contact Steve. We invite parents, especially those with younger swimmers at the Club, to become more involved and join the Committee. We don’t need you to hold any formal position but we are looking for those who have an interest in the Club and can contribute new ideas. The Committee meets just 6 times a year, on a Monday evening, for an average of two hours per meeting. Please come along to the AGM or contact the Chairman (details at top of letter).
